How To: Picnic Like a Pro

Uploaded Image: /vs-uploads/blog/Picnic-Buffet_1200w.jpgJust because summer’s over, doesn’t mean al fresco dining has to come to an end.

Imagine a sunny, crisp afternoon spent sharing a decadent meal in an apple orchard, sharing wine and charcuterie at a vineyard, or, our favorite, tailgating festivities. In fact, it was this type of sharing that prompted the original design of the COVALEY serving utensil.

There’s so much more we can do with picnics other than cold cuts, chips, and pre-cut veggies. While there’s certainly still room for those staples, let’s get a little more adventurous. 2020 has wreaked havoc on our conventional dining experiences, so it’s time we get a little creative and treat ourselves, friends, and loved ones.

Lofty Beginnings:

A simple way to add some extra “oomph” to your picnic is an elevated salad. Experiment with adding things like cous-cous, roasted butternut squash, cranberries, apples, nuts, seasonal veggies, and something other than romaine. Our favorites for fall include kale, rainbow chard, and arugula.

Up Your Sandwich Game:

Let’s move on to sandwiches. We’re not just putting some mayo, turkey, and cheese on white bread and calling it a day. Savory and decadent, remember?

It’s easy to upgrade your sandwich by layering in seasonal ingredients, and with a stop into a local bakery, you can choose from artisan breads with unique tastes and textures.

For example, try layering apple, brie, turkey, and Dijon mustard on a baguette. Or stack roasted sweet potato, goat cheese, and arugula on a whole grain bread for the vegetarians in the crowd. Plan ahead by making a big batch of fall chicken salad and add cranberries, walnuts, and red grapes to your usual recipe and pile it all on a croissant. The options are limitless. There’s no excuse for boring sandwiches.

Keep Them Coming Back:

Don’t forget the snacks and small bites. We’ve already shown you how to perfect a charcuterie board, and honestly, that’s always a winner for picnic foods. Easy to transport with a COVALEY serving utensil, simple to make, and who doesn’t want to snack on marinated cheeses, meats, fun fruit skewers, veggie finger sandwiches, crackers, and festive dips and homemade salsas and sauces while sipping on some hot cider or a pumpkin spice latte?

Fabulous Finale:

For the finisher, let’s talk portable, decadent desserts. Be sure to include make-ahead fall deserts, like pumpkin cookies with cream cheese frosting, oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, or apples and a caramel dipping sauce. Look around your farmer's market or grocery store. There is a bounty of fresh, delicious, and seasonal options to choose from.

Well, now that we’ve made ourselves hungry, we’ve got to locate the nearest orchard, call our closest friends, and enjoy all the food we’ve written about and are now craving. Share your weekend and favorite recipes ideas with us on Facebook or Instagram using #COVALEYToday.

Enjoy the great outdoors with some great food! Bon Appetit!
